Built-Up / Flat Roofs

It is generally a series of layers successively laminated together with asphalt. The asphalt is heated to a liquid form and then mopped onto a base sheet. More layers of base sheet are laid into more layers of hot asphalt until the desired number of layers is achieved. Built-up roofing is the most common type of roof on structures with low slope.

But, aside from a few early design problems, there's no reason a modern skylight fixture should leak any more than any other roof component. One reason the skylight has been vilified is that many roofers don't understand the limitations of different styles of skylight.

A shingle roof works very much like a tile roof in that it's essentially a water sheds as to waterproof membranes like built-up roofs. Basically, water is intended to bounce from shingle to shingle until it falls over the edge of the roof. Shingle roofs have historically been very successful when installed on houses where the roof consists of two slopes with a chimney in the middle.

Most of the cost associated with the repair of a tile roof is in the removal and replacement of the tiles. The biggest challenge is doing that in such a manner that it's not detectable AND successfully corrects the leak problem.

Roof tiles break. it's a fact. Perhaps someone stepped on them wrong, hit them with a golf ball, or the roof tiles were broken when they were installed. Some roofing tiles come damaged from the factory and some break from expansion and contraction.
