The Penland Studio Owned and operated by registered landscape architect Ben Pethel, The Penland Studio is among Knoxville's premier landscape architecture firms. Since founding The Penland Studio in 2005, Ben has been able to shape commercial and institutional projects as well as creatively challenging residential projects.

After spending most of his career employed by big firms who deal mostly with large-scale projects, Ben thrives on the more varied challenges of simultaneously addressing commercial, institutional and residential sites. He enjoys exploring the unique design and technical components of individual projects, learning more about how people interact with outdoor spaces, solving problems, and helping others to improve and enjoy their environments.
Services
Consulting
Report
Although it could be said that everything we do is consulting, we're referring here to hourly design services. Sometimes homeowners or landscape contractors need help with specific areas. We occasionally team with other landscape architects to assist with large projects.
Cost Estimating
Report
Cost estimates can be valuable tools in the planning or phasing of projects. As part of our agreements for master plans, we offer an option to provide an Order of Magnitude Opinion of Probable Construction Costs.
Construction Documents
Report
Simply put, construction documents are the drawings and written specifications that tell a contractor what to build, where to put it, and how it all goes together. For landscape architects, these often include site plans, planting plans, irrigation plans, and the related construction details.
Design
Report
Design is what we do! Yes, there are spaces we all encounter on occasion and think to ourselves, THAT is art! But as design professionals, we've learned that attention to design throughout the process is of critical importance to a successful project.
Master Plans
Report
Many of our residential clients begin with master plans. These documents provide a comprehensive design for a given property which considers opportunities and constraints as well as the homeowner's wish lists. They deal with issues such as screening for privacy, vehicular circulation, pedestrian circulation, slopes, views, architectural relationships, and personal lifestyles.
