Otherwise known as asphalt shingles, this tends to be one of the least expensive roofing material options and is good for most styles of roof pitches. Each shingle's base is placed between two layers of asphalt, making them durable and easy to repair. A typical shingle features weather-resistant mineral granules on one side and a heat-activated self-seal strip on the other side.

This low-cost option is more common for commercial properties but can also be seen in residential patio roofs and decks. Flat roofs are built up with layers of roofing felt and hot tar or asphalt, either applied with a torch or a mop. Modified bitumen roofing increases the durability with an additional layer of fiberglass or polyester and a top layer of gravel.
